BMV Unveils Plan For New Standard License Plate Featuring 1901 Maine Flag Design

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles unveiled its plan for a new standard license plate in Maine, featuring the 1901 design with the iconic Pine Tree. The BMV is asking for comments from Mainers before designing a prototype this summer and unveiling their proposal to lawmakers next year. A few years ago, the BMV had been considering an alternate design option. Still, Maine residents celebrate this new opportunity to show off our state pride on one of our most frequent interactions with other folks: driving down the highway.

To improve legibility for law enforcement and the look of the plate, the BMV is changing to a standard reflective sticker that can be placed on the inside, outside or bottom of a plate. In partnership with municipal officials to make this movement possible, the BMV is working with towns and cities to determine how to place these reflective stickers on the plate best. During a public hearing held in May, residents of various communities expressed concern about the design being made mandatory or preferred by municipalities.

In response to these concerns, the BMV has introduced several changes in design that will meet all of their requirements while preserving existing options. These changes include removing a second symbol, modifying the color, and keeping the current size options. The Transportation Committee has to approve this proposal before it can move to a full vote in the Legislature. When it gets that approval, the cash for the plate will be raised competitively, with proceeds split between the BMV and a new Division of Parks and Public Lands.

A unique opportunity to show off the Pine Tree State has emerged. The design features the 1901 state flag on a Pine Tree and will be unique, durable, and more recognizable on the road. The new design will symbolize the strength and beauty of Maine while providing important safety features. The new plate will be made of a reflective material that is difficult to replicate and can be easily placed on all existing plates.
