AZ Travel ID Deadline Extended, Officials Announce

Default News Image

DHS has extended the deadline for air travelers in Arizona to obtain new IDs to May 7. 2025. The new IDs are to be compliant with new federal standards. Still, travelers are encouraged to obtain an Arizona Travel ID to avoid delays at TSA checkpoints. On May 7, 2025, the new Federally Compliant identification, including the standard Arizona Travel ID, will be needed to pass through TSA checkpoints for domestic flights within Arizona. For most travelers, the main reason to obtain the Arizona Travel ID is to make travel easy. Valid Federally Compliant identification will include the standard Arizona Travel ID and a valid US Passport.

Without it, travelers risk missing their flights when standard driver's licenses are no longer accepted. AZ travelers presenting a driver's license will have to provide additional information without a Federally Compliant ID. This information includes:

  • Social Security Number
  • Proof of Identity
  • Two documents proving AZ residency

The Social Security Number is all that is needed. Travelers need not carry or show their physical card. Proof of identity may include a US Passport or a birth certificate. Documents proving Arizona residency include bank or rental statements and cell phone or credit card bills. These documents must include the traveler's name and current address.

The new IDs are called REAL ID, and the initiative is going into place nationwide. Arizona residents must create an account with MVD and sign in to apply online. After the May 7, 2025, deadline, anyone planning to travel domestically or visit a Federal facility must have a REAL ID card.

The new Federal IDs look like the traditional driver's licenses people are used to. But they contain more verifying information and feature a gold or black star in the upper right-hand corner. The DHS website provides an active countdown timer to the deadline to obtain the new ID.
