The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced a major resurfacing project for State Route 83 through the small community of Sonoita in Santa Cruz County. According to ADOT’s May 5, 2026 “Project Spotlight” update, road crews will spend the next few weeks repairing a two‑mile stretch of SR 83 near mileposts 29–31, where the existing pavement has reached the end of its service life【390211574024241†L48-L66】. The $3.9 million project will mill off the worn‑out asphalt, lay a fresh layer of pavement, replace damaged guardrail and apply a fog coat to protect the new surface from the elements.

In addition to resurfacing the roadway, ADOT will make a number of safety improvements. New rumble strips will be added at the edge and center lines, signage will be updated and striping will be refreshed to improve visibility for drivers. Crews will also repair drainage features so the roadway can better shed rainwater during monsoon storms【390211574024241†L48-L66】. ADOT officials say the project not only improves the ride quality for motorists but also extends the life of the highway, which is an important link for residents, ranchers and tourists who visit local wineries and the nearby Patagonia Mountain foothills.

Work is scheduled to take place primarily on weekdays when traffic volumes are lower, and ADOT will maintain one lane of traffic throughout construction. Drivers should plan for intermittent flagging operations, pilot cars and delays of up to 15 minutes when crews are working. ADOT asks motorists to slow down, obey flaggers and be prepared for uneven pavement and construction equipment in the work zone. Businesses and residences in Sonoita will remain accessible, but travelers may wish to allow extra time when driving through the area. Once the main paving is complete, crews will return later in the summer to apply a fog seal and restripe the highway, which requires warmer temperatures to properly cure【390211574024241†L48-L66】.

Funding for the project comes from the state’s pavement preservation program. ADOT notes that investing in timely maintenance avoids costlier repairs in the future and supports the local economy by keeping goods and visitors moving. The agency appreciates the community’s patience during construction and encourages drivers to check az511.gov for updates on traffic conditions. With its new surface and safety upgrades, State Route 83 through Sonoita will be smoother, safer and ready to serve southern Arizona travelers for years to come.
