Arizona Avenue Loop 202 Off-Ramp to Close for 60-Day Widening Project

Drivers in the East Valley should be ready for a long‑term ramp closure on Loop 202. The Arizona Department of Transportation announced on Oct. 7, 2025 that it will close the eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) off‑ramp at Arizona Avenue in Chandler for approximately two months beginning late Thursday night, Oct. 9. The closure is part of ADOT’s $200 million Loop 202 Improvement Project, which is widening eight miles of freeway between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive to add general‑purpose and auxiliary lanes and update several interchanges. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by mid‑December.

During the closure, crews will reconstruct the ramp to accommodate the widened freeway and improve safety. To keep traffic moving, ADOT advises drivers heading eastbound on Loop 202 to exit earlier at Alma School Road or McQueen Road. The agency recently reopened the westbound Loop 202 off‑ramp at Price Road after a two‑month closure for similar reconstruction work.

The larger Loop 202 Improvement Project is funded in part by Proposition 400, the half‑cent sales tax for transportation approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. Managed by the Maricopa Association of Governments, the project is designed to increase capacity on one of the Southeast Valley’s busiest corridors and support continued economic growth. In addition to adding lanes, the work includes bridge upgrades, ramp improvements and new pavement. Construction is coordinated to minimize disruption; for example, the upcoming ramp closure begins after nightly lane restrictions and is timed to avoid overlapping closures at adjacent interchanges.

Area motorists should plan ahead and allow extra time during the closure. Even with detours, heavy traffic is expected near the Arizona Avenue and Alma School Road interchanges, especially during peak commute hours. Drivers should obey posted speed limits in the work zone and be alert for construction workers and equipment.

For real‑time traffic information and detour routes, visit ADOT’s traveler information site at az511.gov or download the AZ 511 app. ADOT will continue to provide updates on social media and through its project website as work progresses. By accommodating the temporary inconvenience of this closure, East Valley drivers will ultimately benefit from smoother traffic flow and improved access once the wider Loop 202 corridor opens later this year.
