ADOT Issues Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for January 23‑26, 2026

The Arizona Department of Transportation is urging drivers in the Phoenix metropolitan area to plan ahead and allow extra travel time this weekend as crews close or restrict several sections of freeway for maintenance and improvement projects. In its January 22, 2026 Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory, ADOT detailed a series of closures and lane restrictions that will be in place from Friday evening, Jan. 23, through the early hours of Monday morning, Jan. 26. The largest project is along Interstate 10 near the Broadway Curve. Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, eastbound I‑10 will be reduced to two lanes and drivers will encounter narrowed shoulders between 40th Street and U.S. 60 while crews shift traffic and install barrier for the ongoing Broadway Curve reconstruction. The restrictions will remain in effect until 4 a.m. Monday and drivers should expect heavy congestion.
ADOT also plans to close westbound Interstate 10 between U.S. 60 and Interstate 17 from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday to allow crews to set steel girders for the new Salt River Bridge and to reconstruct the interchange ramps. During this closure, westbound U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway) will be closed from Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to I‑10 for pavement sealing. Drivers traveling from the East Valley should use Loop 202 Santan or Loop 101 south to Loop 202 Red Mountain to connect with I‑10 west of the closure. On‑ramps from Baseline Road to westbound US 60 will be closed, and detours will be signed. The project team advises motorists to avoid the area if possible or to use the Sky Harbor Boulevard entrance to I‑10 westbound as an alternate route.
In the northern suburbs, northbound Interstate 17 will be narrowed to one lane between Anthem Way and Bumble Bee Road from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday so crews can apply a pavement sealant. Southbound I‑17 will also be restricted to one lane near the 7th Avenue interchange for sign installation. Closer to downtown Phoenix, the eastbound I‑10 off‑ramp to 16th Street will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday for utility work; drivers should exit at 24th Street or 7th Street instead. ADOT warns that all of these restrictions are subject to change and may be postponed in the event of inclement weather.
Motorists are encouraged to obey work‑zone speed limits, heed flaggers and traffic control devices, and give crews plenty of room to work. Portable message boards and the az511.gov website will provide real‑time traffic information throughout the weekend. While these closures may cause temporary inconvenience, ADOT reminds drivers that the projects are part of long‑term efforts to improve capacity, reduce congestion and enhance safety on some of Arizona’s busiest freeways. By planning alternate routes and leaving early, travelers can help keep traffic flowing and protect workers during this busy construction weekend.
