Renewing a Drivers License in Alabama
Renew Alabama License or ID
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) allows AL residents to renew their driver licenses or photo IDs 6 months before their card expires. You can renew:
- Online
OR
- In person.
Renew Your AL Driver’s License Online
You will NOT be able to renew your license online if you:
- Wish to obtain a REAL ID for the first time.
- Need to:
- Change your license class
- Remove a restriction.
- Update your address.
- Change your name.
- Take a picture for your license/ID.
To renew your Alabama license or state ID online, visit the ALEA online portal and provide your:
- License or ID type.
- Name.
- License or ID number.
- Date of birth.
- Last 4 digits of your social security number (SSN).
- Credit card information for payment of the $36.25 renewal fee*.
Once you’ve completed the transaction, you’ll receive your new ID within 30 days.
*Certain counties may charge additional fees for renewal.
Renew Your Alabama Driver’s License in Person
There are 2 types of locations you may use to renew your license or ID in person.
You MUST renew in person at an ALEA licensing office if you:
- Wish to obtain a REAL ID for the first time.
- Have to change your license class or remove a restriction.
You may renew at a county probate or license commissioner office if you need to:
- Update your address.
- Change your name.
- Take a picture for your license/ID.
At the location, you may be asked to provide your:
- Current license or ID.
- Proof of address (if you are changing your address).
- Proof of name change (if applicable). This may include a:
- Marriage certificate.
- Divorce certificate.
- Court documents to prove name change.
- Medical certification (for CDL drivers).
- Payment for the renewal fee. Renewal costs:
- $36.25 for standard and motorcycle licenses.
- $66.25 for Class A renewal.
- $56.25 for Class B renewal.
