Vermont License or ID Renewal
Keeping a valid Vermont license or ID is important. There are a few different ways to renew. You can renew:
- Online.
- By mail.
- In person.
You should receive a renewal notice in the mail 30 days before your ID or license expires.
To be eligible to renew online or by mail you must:
- NOT hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
- Have had a license photo taken within the last 4 years.
- NOT need to change your name.

Renew VT License or ID Online
Most Vermont residents are eligible to renew their licenses or IDs online. To renew online, visit the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) online portal and provide your:
- Birthdate.
- License or ID number AND your:
- Social security number (SSN).
OR
- Renewal letter PIN.
OR
- Document discriminator number (located on the bottom of your ID).
- Payment for the applicable fee.
Your new license or ID will be mailed to your address after you complete your transaction. It may take around 10 business days to receive.
Renew Vermont License or ID by Mail
To renew by mail:
- Complete the form provided with your renewal notice OR an Application for License/Permit (VL-021).
- Provide a check for the renewal fee.
- Mail your items to:

Renew Vermont License or ID in Person
If you need to renew your license or ID in person, you can do so at your local DMV office. Consider making an appointment in advance.
There, you may be asked to:
- Take a vision exam.
- Have your photo taken.
- Provide your:
- Current license or ID.
- Name change documents (if applicable).
- Medical certification (for non-excepted CDL holders).
- Pay the renewal fee.
