Title and Register a Vehicle in Vermont

If you live in Vermont and own a vehicle, you must title and register it through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), whether you just purchased it or moved in from another state.

This will require a trip to your local DMV office. Consider scheduling an appointment in advance.

Title and Register a Recently Purchased Vehicle in Vermont

If you just bought a vehicle, visit your local DMV office and provide the:

When you move to Vermont, you’ll have 60 days from establishing residency to title and register your vehicle. Visit your local DMV and provide:

  • A completed Registration Application Form (VD-119).
  • The vehicle title OR most recent registration AND the name and address of the lienholder.
  • The current odometer reading.
  • A VIN verification, completed by a DMV employee or law enforcement officer.
  • Proof of the purchase price and sales tax paid. If you have owned the vehicle for 3 years or more in a state that collects taxes, you may provide the title or previous 3 registrations instead.
  • Payment for the applicable fees

  • Gas or diesel passenger car (2-year registration): $140.00
  • Electric passenger car (1-year registration): $74.00
  • Electric passenger car (2-year registration): $136.00
  • Title fee: $35.00
  • Lien recording fee: $11.00
