A detailed guide of changing your address with TxDMV and Texas DPS.

Relocating to a new home can be both an exciting and overwhelming. The chaos of packing, moving, and settling into your new place is alot, and it's crucial not to overlook the administrative tasks that come with a change of residence. In the state of Texas, updating your address with the Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is a legal obligation. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough to ensure that your vehicle registration and driver's license reflect your current address, keeping you compliant with Texas regulations.

 

Changing Address for Vehicle Registration (TxDMV):

1.) Online:

  1. Visit the TxDMV Vehicle Registration Renewal Page: Go to the TxDMV's Vehicle Registration Renewal website.

  2. Enter Required Information: You'll need your license plate number and the last four digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If you're unsure of these details, they can be found on your current registration receipt.

  3. Select "Change of Address": During the process, you'll have the option to change your address.

  4. Enter New Address: Input your new address details accurately.

  5. Review and Confirm: Double-check all the information you've entered.

  6. Complete the Process: Follow the prompts to finalize the change.

2.) In Person:

  1. Check the wait times for a Texas DPS office near you.

  2. Visit a Local County Tax Office: Locate the nearest county tax office.

  3. Request a Change of Address Form: Once there, ask for the necessary form to change your address for vehicle registration.

  4. Fill Out the Form: Complete the form with your new address details. Ensure all information is accurate.

  5. Submit the Form: Hand the completed form to the representative.

  6. Confirmation: They'll process the change and provide you with a confirmation or updated registration.

3.) By Mail:

  1. Obtain the Form: Download and print the Change of Address form for vehicle registration from the TxDMV website.

  2. Complete the Form: Fill out the form with your new address details using clear and legible handwriting.

  3. Mail the Form: Send the completed form to your local county tax office. The specific address should be on the form or can be found on the TxDMV website.

  4. Wait for Confirmation: The county tax office will process the change and send you a confirmation by mail.

 

Changing Address for Driver's License (Texas DPS):

1.) Online:

  1. Visit the Texas DPS Change of Address Page: Access the Texas DPS Change of Address website.

  2. Log In or Create an Account: If you don't have an online account, you'll need to create one.

  3. Follow the Prompts: Input your new address and other required information.

  4. Submit and Confirm: Review the details and submit the change. Save or print the confirmation for your records.

2.) In Person:

  1. Fill out the form: Make sure you print and fill out the change of address form before you go.

  2. Visit a DPS Office: Check the wait times and locate a Texas DPS office. Or the nearest one to you. 

  3. Queue System: Upon arrival, take a number and wait for your turn.

  4. Inform the Representative: If you did not bring the form with you, let them know you're changing your address.They'll provide you with a form to complete. Fill it out accurately.

  5. Submit and Pay Fee: There might be a fee for a new license with your updated address. Pay the fee and submit the form.

  6. Receive New License: They'll provide you with a new driver's license featuring your new address.

3.) By Mail:

  1. Obtain the Form: Download and print the necessary Driver's License Application form from the Texas DPS website.

  2. Complete the Form: Fill it out with your new address and other required details.

  3. Mail the Form with Payment: There might be a fee for a new license. Send the form and payment to the address provided on the form.

  4. Wait for New License: Texas DPS will process the change and mail you a new driver's license.

 

If you're moving to Texas from out of state:

  1. Driver's License:

    • Prepare Documents: Gather proof of identity, Social Security number, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status, and Texas residency. The DPS provides a list of acceptable documents.
    • Visit the DPS: Head to your local DPS office, Dont forget to check the wait times using DMVAppointments.org. When you get there, take a number and wait your turn.
    • Surrender Out-of-State License: You'll need to give up your out-of-state license.
    • Application & Testing: Fill out the application for a new Texas driver's license. You'll also need to pass a vision test and potentially a written and/or driving test.
  2. Vehicle Registration:

    • Vehicle Inspection: Before registering, your vehicle must pass a state inspection. Find a state inspection station.
    • Visit the County Tax Office: With the inspection certificate, your out-of-state title, proof of insurance that meets Texas standards, and ID, visit your local county tax office.
    • Complete the Process: Fill out the necessary forms, pay the fees, and obtain your Texas registration and plates.
