Title and Register a Vehicle in Tennessee
Whether you recently purchased a vehicle or just moved to the Volunteer State, you’ll have to title and register your vehicle at your county clerk’s office.
Title and Register a TN Vehicle
To title and register a vehicle purchased in Tennessee, visit your local county clerk and provide:
- The current title (signed over to you) OR Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (for new vehicles).
- The new vehicle invoice (new vehicles only).
- Your license or ID and proof of residency.
- The Odometer Disclosure Statement (RV-F1317001), if the vehicle was manufactured in 2011 or after.
- Your current registration (if you wish to transfer your license plate).
- An Affidavit of Non-Dealer Transfers (RV-F1301201) if your vehicle was a gift, inherited, or purchased well below estimated price.
- Payment for the applicable fees and taxes.
Register and Title a Vehicle: New Tennessee Residents
When you move to Tennessee, you’ll have to get a vehicle emissions check before titling and registering. Once your vehicle passes the emissions test, visit your local county clerk’s office and provide:
- Your ID and proof of TN residency.
- Most recent out-of-state vehicle registration.
- The out-of-state title OR the name and address of the lienholder of the vehicle.
- Payment for the applicable fees and taxes.
