License or ID Renewal in South Dakota
It’s important to keep a valid South Dakota license or ID for a variety of reasons. Fortunately there are several options for renewal. You can renew:
- Online
- By mail.
- In person.
You can renew up to 180 days before expiration if your ID has a gold star in the corner. This signifies it is compliant with the REAL ID Act.
Renew SD License or ID in Person
You MUST renew in person if you(r):
- Current license or ID is NOT REAL ID-compliant.
- Renewed online or by mail last renewal.
- License has been expired more than 30 days*.
- Need to change your name.
- Need to change your license type or add endorsements.
- Are required to take a driving test to renew.
- Wear bioptic lenses (only applies for driver’s licenses).
- Changed your citizenship or immigration status since last renewal.
Please schedule an appointment at your local office beforehand.
If your ID has a gold star in the corner, you must provide payment and:
- Proof of South Dakota residency (2 documents required). At least 1 document must be your residential address. These items must be less than 1 year old and may include your:
- Utility bill.
- Paystub.
- Bank statement.
- Vehicle registration.
- Proof of name change if applicable. May include a:
- Marriage certificate.
- Divorce decree.
- Adoption papers.
- Proof of lawful presence (if you are not a U.S. citizen, or were not a U.S. citizen when you last renewed or applied). This may include a:
- Permanent resident card.
- Certificate of Citizenship.
- Certificate of Naturalization.

*This will require passing a written knowledge test.
Renew South Dakota License or ID Online
If you are 65 years old or older you must provide a vision statement form completed within the past year.
You must submit 2 documents* to prove South Dakota residency prior to renewal. These documents may be uploaded, emailed, or faxed to (605) 773-3018.
To renew online, visit the online portal and provide your:
- License or ID number.
- Birthdate.
- Social security number (SSN).
- Credit card information for payment.
Your new license or ID should arrive within 3-4 weeks.
*These items must NOT be handwritten and MUST be dated within the past year.
Renew SD License or ID by mail
To renew by mail:
- Complete a South Dakota Driver’s License/ID Card Application.
- Provide a vision statement form completed within the past year (if you are 65 years old or older).
- Provide 2 documents from within the past year that prove South Dakota residency (may NOT be handwritten).
- Enclose a check for the applicable fee made payable to the “Department of Public Safety.”

South Dakota License and ID Renewal Fees
- Standard license or ID renewal: $28
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL) renewal: $33
- $48 with HAZMAT renewal.
- Electronic check fee: $1.50
- Credit card fee: $2 or 2.95% of total fee (whichever is greater).
