New Mexico Vehicle Registration Renewal
Vehicle registration fees are due once every 1 or 2 years in New Mexico. There are a few different ways to renew your registration. You may renew:
- Online.
- By mail.
- In person.
Renew New Mexico Registration Online
The easiest and cheapest way to renew a New Mexico vehicle registration is by using the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) online system. Renewing online saves 5% on your total registration fees. However, there is an additional $1.55 credit card fee incurred with online transactions.
To renew online:
- Visit the MVD online portal.
- Click “Renew Vehicle Registration.”
- Choose between “Express Registration Renewal” and “Traditional Registration Renewal.” The later option allows you to:
- Choose the registration term (1 or 2 years).
- Request a new license plate.
- Change your address.
- Update contact information.
- Provide your control number (this is found on the renewal notice you received in the mail) OR your license plate number AND vehicle identification number (VIN).
- You will also need your zip code.
- Submit payment using a credit card. The MVD accepts:
- Visa.
- MasterCard.
- Discover.
- American Express.
Renew NM Registration by Mail
New Mexico residents can also renew their vehicle registrations by mail. To renew by mail:
- Complete the form attached to the renewal notice you received in the mail.
- Enclose a check for either the 1-year or 2-year registration renewal amount made payable to the “New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division.”

Renew New Mexico Car Registration in Person
The last way to renew a New Mexico registration is by visiting your local MVD office. There, you may be asked to provide your:
- Current registration and/or renewal notice.
- Payment for the registration renewal fees for either 1-year or 2-year renewal. MVD offices accept cash and checks.
New Mexico Registration Renewal Fees
Registration renewal fees in New Mexico are based on the weight of the vehicle. Fees will be listed on your renewal notice.
- For passenger vehicles (1-year renewal): $27-$62.
- For passenger vehicles (2-year renewal): $54-$124.
- For trucks up to 26,000 pounds (1-year renewal): $38.00-$207.00.
- For trucks up to 26,000 pounds (2-year renewal): $76.00-$414.00.
- Late fee (up to 31 days late): $10.
- Late fee (over 31 days late: Additional 75% of registration fee.
