New Mexico Vehicle Registration
Register a Vehicle in New Mexico
There are a few different reasons why you’d need to register a vehicle for the first time in New Mexico. You may have:
- Purchased a new vehicle.
- Purchased a used vehicle.
- Moved to New Mexico from another state.
The documents required are slightly different based on your unique situation. All transactions are completed at your local Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office*.
*If you have recently moved to New Mexico, you will have to get a vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection to register. This service is provided at most, but not all MVD offices. Inquire with the office before you make your trip.
New Mexico Car Insurance
Before registering your vehicle, the New Mexico MVD requires vehicle owners to purchase liability insurance.
The New Mexico MVD requires that drivers are covered for:
- $25,000 in expenses for death or injury for 1 person.
- $50,000 in expenses for death or injury for 2 or more people.
- $10,000 in property damage per single accident.
When you register your car you must show proof of your car insurance. This may include your:
- Insurance card.
- Copy of your insurance policy.
- A document from your insurance company on the official letterhead that confirms your coverage.
Register a New Car in New Mexico
When you register a new vehicle in New Mexico, you’re required to register and title it at the MVD within 90 days of purchasing or pay a late fee.
Visit the MVD and provide:
- New Mexico identification.
- The original Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO). If the mileage statement is not provided on the MCO, you must also provide an odometer reading. This may include a:
- Completed Odometer Mileage Statement (MVD 10187)
OR
- Original or certified copy of the dealer’s invoice or purchase agreement.
- Proof of insurance.
- Payment for your registration and title fees.
If the vehicle was purchased with a lien, you must provide the lienholder’s information.
Register a Used Car in New Mexico
When you register a used car, you must visit your local MVD office with your:
- New Mexico identification.
- Certificate of title. The “assignment of title” section must be completed and signed by the seller.
- Odometer statement signed by both buyer and seller. This may include the:
- Completed Certificate of Title Bill of Sale (MVD 10009).
- Completed Odometer Mileage Statement (MVD 10187)
OR
- Completed Application for Title and Registration (MVD 10002)
- Payment for the applicable fees.
If the vehicle was purchased with a lien, you must also provide the lienholder’s information.
Register an Out-of-State Vehicle in New Mexico
You must get a VIN inspection to title and register your out-of-state vehicle in New Mexico.
Visit an MVD office and provide your:
- New Mexico identification.
- Certificate of title. If there is a lien on the vehicle, you must provide the lienholder’s name and address so that the MVD may acquire a copy.
- Proof of New Mexico insurance.
- Payment for the:
- Motor Vehicle Excise Tax (MVET).
- Title fee.
- Registration fee.
New Mexico Registration Fees
Registration fees are based on the weight of the vehicle.
- Registration for passenger vehicles (1-year renewal): $27-$62.
- Registration for passenger vehicles (2-year renewal): $54-$124.
- Registration for trucks up to 26,000 pounds (1-year renewal): $38.00-$207.00.
- Registration for trucks up to 26,000 pounds (2-year renewal): $76.00-$414.00.
- MVET: 4% of the:
- Price paid for the vehicle OR the NADA value of the vehicle.
- Late title fee: The MVET is raised to 6%.
