Renew a North Dakota Driver’s License or ID
Keeping a valid North Dakota license or ID is important for a variety of reasons. There are two options to renew a license or ID. You can renew:
- Online.
OR
- In person.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) allows drivers to renew up to:
- 10 months before expiration.
- 1 year after expiration (without having to retest).
North Dakota Online License Renewal
You are eligible to renew a driver’s license online if you:
- Are under 65 years old.
- Did NOT renew online last time.
- Have changed any of the information on your license besides your address.
To renew online, visit the online portal and:
- Enter your:
- Driver’s license number.
- License issue date.
- Last 4 digits of your social security number (SSN).
- License issue date.
- License expiration date.
- Scan 2 items to prove your North Dakota residence if you need to change your address or hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL). CDL holders* must also provide a scan of their:
- Medical examiner’s certificate (if there is not a current one on file). Email a PDF to [email protected] or fax to: (701) 328-0308. Approval may take 2-3 business days.
- Proof of legal U.S. presence.
- Provide payment for the renewal fee.
*CDL holders with a Hazmat endorsement must renew in person.
Renew a North Dakota License or ID in Person
To renew a ND license or ID in person, visit your local licensing office and provide your current license and corrective lenses (if you use them to drive). You will be required to take a vision exam when you renew in person.

- License renewal: $15.
- CDL renewal: $15 + $3 for each endorsement.
- Non-driver ID renewal (under 18 years old): $8.
