Montana License or ID Renewal
Keeping a valid ID or license in Montana is important for a variety of reasons. You can renew up to 6 months before or 4 months after your identification expires.
Fortunately, there are a few ways to renew a Montana license. You can renew:
- Online.
- By mail.
- In person.
NOTE: Montana non-driver IDs must be renewed in person.

Renew MT License Online
Many Montana residents can renew their driver’s licenses online. You may renew online if you:
- Are a U.S. citizen.
- Have a Montana license that is eligible for renewal and has not been suspended or revoked in any state.
- Renewed your last identification in person.
- Are between 21 and 67 years old.
How to Renew a Montana License Online
Before renewing online, make sure you gather a(n):
- Eye Evaluation (22-1801) form completed by an eye doctor.
- Driver Medical Evaluation (20-1900) form completed by a physician.
- Photocopy of 2 acceptable forms of ID. These may include your*:
- Current license.
- S. birth certificate.
- Social security card.
To renew online, you must visit the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) online portal and provide your:
- License number.
- Last 4 digits of your social security number (SSN).
- Email address or phone number.
- Address.
This will determine if you are eligible to renew online. If you are, follow the instructions to complete the transaction.

Renew Montana License by Mail
Renewing a Montana license by mail has the same eligibility requirements as for online renewal. Additionally, you may only renew by mail if you:
- Reside outside of Montana and will NOT return before your license expires.
OR
- Live in one of the following counties:
- Wibaux.
- Treasure.
- Prairie.
- Petroleum.
- Madison.
- Judith Basin.
- Jefferson.
- Golden Valley.
- Garfield.
- Carter.
To renew by mail, provide a(n):

AND
- Eye Evaluation (22-1801) form completed by an eye doctor (may not be required).
- Driver Medical Evaluation (20-1900) form completed by a physician (may not be required).
- Photocopy of your current license or other accepted identity document.
- Check for the applicable fee made payable to the MVD.
Commercial drivers must provide a photocopy of:
- The Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC).
- The commercial driver’s license (CDL) AND one of the following:
- U.S. birth certificate.
- Valid U.S. passport.
- Valid permanent resident card.
Mail your items to the address printed on the renewal form.
Renew an MT License or ID in Person
To renew a Montana ID or license in person, visit your local MVD office and provide your:
- Current license or ID.
- Eye Evaluation (22-1801) form completed by an eye doctor (if required)*.
- Driver Medical Evaluation (20-1900) form completed by a physician (if required)*.
- Payment for the applicable renewal fee.
You will be given a temporary license or ID. Your permanent card will be mailed to you within 2 to 4 weeks.
Montana License and ID Renewal Fees
- Non-driver ID card: $16.48.
- Non-driver ID card (21 years old and under): $8.24 (valid 4 years).
- 8-year driver license (21-67 years old): $41.72.
- 7- year driver license (68 years old): $36.57.
- 6-year driver license (69 years old): $31.42.
- 5-year license (70 years old): $26.27.
- 4-year license (71 years old): $21.12.
- 3-year license (72 years old): $15.97.
- 2-year license (73 years old): $10.82.
- 1-year license (74 years old): $5.67.
- 4-year license (75 years old and older): $21.12.
