Montana vehicles must be registered through the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Registration fees are due annually or biannually (permanent registration is also available). You can renew:

  • Online
  • By mail.
  • In person.

Montana Online Car Registration Renewal

The easiest way to renew a vehicle registration in Montana is to renew online. You can renew online as long as you:

  • Have not moved to a different county or changed your name or address.
  • Qualify for an exemption.
  • Wish to:
    • Change your registration period,
    • Change your vehicle weight.
    • Request a new plate.

To renew online, visit the online portal and provide your:

  • Vehicle number, Vehicle identification number (VIN), or Title number.
  • Payment for the renewal fee.

In special cases, you may be required to submit additional documents electronically.

Your registration and sticker will be sent to your address.

Renew MT Vehicle Registration by Mail

To renew a vehicle registration by mail:

  1. Complete the form attached to your Registration Renewal Notice.
  2. Enclose a check for applicable fee made payable to the County Treasurer.
  3. Mail these items to the address listed on your renewal notice.

Renew Montana Registration in Person

To renew a vehicle registration in person, visit your local county treasurer. You may be asked to provide your:

  • License plate number.
  • VIN.
  • Identification.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • Payment for the renewal fee.

Montana Registration Renewal Fees

Passenger vehicle fees are based on the age of the vehicle.

  • Vehicle that is 0 to 4 years old: $217 per year.
  • Vehicle that is 5 to 10 years old: $87 per year.
  • Vehicle that is 11 years old or older: $28 per year.
  • 3% administrative fee.
