Register a Vehicle in Idaho

Register an Idaho Vehicle

When you move to Idaho or purchase a vehicle, you’ll need to title and register it with the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

When you purchase a vehicle from a Idaho dealership, usually the company will file for a title within 30 days of purchase.

If you are a new resident or purchase a vehicle from a private party, you will have to transfer the title and register the vehicle yourself within 30 days of purchase or establishing Idaho residency.

To transfer the title and register a vehicle, visit or mail the following to your county motor vehicle office. Provide your:

  • Bill of Sale (ITD 3738).
  • Title (signed by both the buyer and seller if applicable).
  • Odometer disclosure (if the vehicle is younger than 10 years old and under 16,000 pounds). If there is a space on the title, you may enter this information there.
  • Completed Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspection Certificate (ITD 3403), which can be completed by a(n)
    • Agent at the motor vehicle assessor’s office.
    • Employee of the sheriff’s office.
    • Police officer in your county of residence.
  • Completed Power of attorney for Specific Motor Vehicle/Vessel (ITD 3368) form (if you are titling and registering by mail). This authorizes the county assessor to sign the application for the owner).
  • Applicable title, sales tax, and registration fees. If sales tax was already paid to another state or your vehicle was purchased in a non-taxing state, include proof (such as the title from a state that does not charge sales tax) in lieu of the sales tax.

*If the vehicle was purchased on a lien, the lienholder may apply for the title. Contact your local office if your lienholder is out of state for further instructions.
