Vehicle Registration in Delaware
Delaware drivers are required to register their vehicles with the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You may need to register your vehicle for the first time when you:
- Purchase a vehicle. You must title and register your vehicle within 30 days of purchase.
OR
- Move to Delaware from another state. You must title and register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency.
When you purchase a vehicle from a dealership in Delaware, the title and registration paperwork is usually completed for you.
Title and Register Vehicles in Delaware
Titling and registering a vehicle requires a trip to your local DMV office. You must:
- Verify your vehicle identification number (VIN) by driving through the vehicle inspection lane.
- Vehicles more than 7 model years old must get a complete inspection.
- Complete an Application for Title (MV-212).
- Provide your:
- Current title or certificate of origin with an odometer disclosure.
- Bill of sale (for dealer purchases from out-of-state).
- Proof of DE liability insurance.
- DE driver’s license or proof of residency.
- Payment for the applicable registration fee.
If there is a lien on the vehicle, the new title will be mailed to the lienholder.
DE Title and Registration Fees
- Title fee: $35.
- Title fee plus lien recording fee: $55.
- Registration for vehicles 5,000 lbs. or less: $40.
- Registration for commercial vehicles over 5,000 lbs: $40 + $18 for each additional 5,000 pounds.
- Late registration fee: $20.
- Late title fee: $35.
