Renew Colorado Vehicle Registration

Colorado drivers are required to register their vehicles through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) every year. Your county or city of residence may have different options for renewing vehicle registration. Generally, you can renew:

  • Online.
  • By mail.
  • In person.

Some cities, like Denver, allow renewal by phone.

CO Vehicle Registration Online

To renew online, visit the CO DMV online portal and provide your:

  • License plate number.
  • Emissions information (if applicable).
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or verification code.
  • Valid insurance information.
  • Payment for the registration renewal fee.

NOTE: If your vehicle does NOT expire within 1 month, you are NOT eligible to renew online.

Colorado Vehicle Registration by Mail

You can renew your CO registration by mail by providing:

  • The completed form that was included with your renewal notice.
  • Emissions certification (if applicable).
  • Insurance information if requested.
  • A check for payment of the applicable fee.

Mail your items to the address provided on the renewal notice.

CO Vehicle Registration in Person

You also have the option to renew a registration in person at your local motor vehicle office. You may be asked to provide:

  • Your driver’s license or ID.
  • The license plate number and VIN.
  • Proof the vehicle passed an emissions test (if required).
  • Your insurance card or policy information.
  • Payment for the renewal fee.

Registration renewal fees may vary based on the vehicle:

Registration renewal fee will be listed on the renewal notice. For every month up to 4 months after the registration has expired there will be a $25 additional late fee.
