REAL ID Checklist for California Residents
What is a California REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a license or identification card that is accepted by the federal government.
Beginning in May 2025, you’ll need either a REAL ID or passport to:
- Board a commercial, domestic flight.
- Enter a nuclear power plant.
- Enter a federal facility.
Before visiting the DMV, make sure you bring documents that meet the California REAL ID requirements.
If you’re not sure whether your current California driver’s license or ID card is a REAL ID, check to see if there is a gold bear and star on it. If so, you have a REAL ID. However, if your REAL ID was issued between January 2018 and April 2019, you may need to take additional steps to validate your REAL ID.

Is my California REAL ID invalid?
California was one of the first states to comply with the federal government’s REAL ID Act and began issuing REAL IDs in 2018. Unfortunately, the DMV did not require two printed documents to prove CA residency between January 2018 and April 2019, making many of the REAL IDs issued invalid.
To solve the issue, the DMV mailed letters to the addresses listed on the CA REAL IDs obtained by residents who submitted only 1 document proving residency with instructions on how to meet the proper California REAL ID requirements.
I received this letter and the address is correct, what do I do?
If the address listed is current and you received this letter:
- Check the box that says “Yes” when asked if the current address is correct.
- Sign the letter.
- Return the letter:
- By mail to the address given, or
- To a DMV field office.
Once the DMV processes your submission, your California REAL ID becomes valid.
I received a letter from the DMV but the address is incorrect, what do I do?
If your letter was forwarded from an old address, you will need to:
- Check the box that says “No” when asked if the address listed matches your current address.
- Provide 2 documents that prove your current residency. Use the California REAL ID checklist found on the DMV website for a list of acceptable documents.
- Sign the letter.
- Return the letter:
- By mail to the address given, or
- To a DMV field office.
NOTE: This will validate your REAL ID, but it DOES NOT change your address with the CA DMV. You can change your address online.
