Worcester RMV Moves into a New Building

Arriving at the site of a former grocery store will be the new normal for thousands of customers at Worcester RMV's new location. The latest RMV branch opened by the Massachusetts Department of Motor Vehicles provides extra seating and parking for up to 350 vehicles. The Worcester location is an upgrade on the outdated downtown building that was no longer deemed fit for purpose.

The existing location at 611 Main St., Worcester, was closed the Friday before the new site opened at 50 Southwest Cutoff (Route 20). The downtown location at 611 Main St. had led to several problems identified by the state DMV, including cramped conditions and a lack of parking.

Neither of these issues will be a problem at the Route 20 location. The former Big Y supermarket stands at 14,105 square feet. The large parking lot can house 350 vehicles. State authorities had considered the cramped Main St. conditions when choosing the route 20 site. The new location has ample space for waiting customers to remain dry and warm inside the Worcester RMV building.

One of the most significant changes to the work of Worcester RMV staff is the addition of two information desks and 21 transaction kiosks. A dedicated motorcycle test course will allow even more transactions to be completed onsite. A concern for some will be the distance outside the downtown area of the latest Worcester RMV site. A new bus stop has been installed directly outside the new office to allow easy access for public transport users. Worcester RMV will keep its regular office hours of Monday to Friday from nine to five.
