Walk-Ins are still Accepted at a Charlotte DMV.

Default News Image

Walk-ins are welcome at all Charlotte DMV locations, but customers are encouraged to schedule an appointment ahead of time. Scheduled appointments have priority over walk-ins. Wait lines can be long, and walk-ins can be turned away if the DMV has too many scheduled appointments. Long waits at the DMV result from staff shortages, an influx of new people coming into specific areas, and people conducting in-person business that can be done online.

Some transactions require an in-person visit to the DMV, but many such as driver's license renewals and vehicle registration renewals can be accomplished online. The North Carolina DMV website provides information on completing online transactions.

Customers required or wishing to visit the DMV should schedule an appointment ahead of time and bring the correct documentation. Check the NC DMC website to schedule an appointment and list what to bring. Those without computer access can call DMV customer service at 919-715-7000. The Charlotte DMV's are open from 7 AM to 5 PM on Monday through Friday. The offices are closed on state holidays. During peak seasons, the DMV may add Saturday hours. New appointment slots are added daily, and office hours are subject to change, so check back frequently. Avoid the lunchtime hours of 11 AM to 2 PM for shorter wait times.

To enhance the customer experience, North Carolina DMVs are rolling out a new service called Q-Anywhere. The mobile app allows customers to check in for an appointment by scanning a QR code and texting a short message to hold their place in line. Customers may then wait in their vehicle or run errands in the immediate vicinity until ready to be seen. The DMV is also working on a paging system for those without a cell phone.
