Beginning January 1, 2023, South Dakota will unveil a new license plate design for non-commercial and emblem plates while issuing new titles for motor vehicles and registration renewals. This new design will be for plates on standard non-commercial vehicles, emblems, motorcycles, emblem motorcycles, low-speed, and amateur radio. It will also apply to any personalized plates on non-commercial vehicles or motorcycles.

Governor Noem coordinated the new design with the help of the South Dakota Department of Tourism and the Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division. It was designed to reflect their partnership in promoting the state of South Dakota as a destination.

Plates will still be manufactured at Pheasantland Industries, which is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, inside of the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Residents can complete the plate renewal process 90 days before the expiration date; however, they will not receive the new design unless they complete the renewal after January 1.

Renewals can be done online at the MySDCars portal, in person at the driver's county treasurer's office, by mail, or at a DMV Now Kiosk. There will be 21 DMV Now Kiosks placed throughout the state. Drivers can find their closest location at https://sddmvnowkiosk.com/. After completing the renewal process through the online portal or at a DMV Now Kiosk, the new license plate will be mailed directly to the driver.
