A New Law Requires Colorado Drivers to Register the Vehicle or Pay Up
Starting next month, drivers in Colorado who fail to register their vehicles on time will be subject to hefty fines. A new law passed by the state legislature earlier this year aims to crack down on drivers needing to register their vehicles with the state properly. The rule applies to all vehicles, including cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
Under the new law, drivers who fail to register their vehicle within 30 days of purchase or 30 days of moving to Colorado will be subject to a $100 fine. If the car remains unregistered after 60 days, the fine increases to $200. After 90 days, the fine jumps to $500.
The Department of Revenue: Motor Vehicle, responsible for enforcing the new law, urges drivers to remain current on vehicle registration. The department also reminds drivers to register their vehicles online or at any local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
"We understand that some drivers may forget to register their vehicle or may not be aware of the registration requirements," said a Department of Revenue - Motor Vehicle spokesperson. "However, we are taking this issue very seriously and will enforce the new law to ensure that all drivers are properly registered."
The new law has been welcomed by many in the state who feel it is long overdue. "It's about time we start cracking down on drivers who are not properly registering their vehicles," said one Colorado resident. "Not only is it a safety issue, but it's also not fair to the drivers who follow the rules and pay their registration fees on time."
However, some drivers are concerned about the financial burden the new law could impose on them. "I understand the need to register my vehicle, but sometimes things happen, and I may not be able to afford the registration fee right away," said another Colorado resident. "I hope that the Department of Revenue - Motor Vehicle will be understanding and offer some leniency in certain cases."
Despite these concerns, the Department of Revenue - Motor Vehicle urges all drivers to register their vehicles on time to avoid potential fines. The department has also said it will offer payment plans to drivers who cannot pay their registration fees in full at the time of registration.
