The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) announced today that state and local law enforcement agencies are participating in the nationwide "U Drive. U Text. U Pay." campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. In conjunction with Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, law enforcement across the state will increase patrols from Monday, April 3, 2023, through Monday, April 10, 2023.

New York Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and GTSC Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder emphasized the importance of focusing on the road while driving to ensure the safety of passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. He said, "New York led the way in combatting distracted driving by becoming the first state in the nation to prohibit cell phone use while driving. Through this education and enforcement campaign, we remind all drivers that distracted driving is 100 percent preventable."

New York State Police Acting Superintendent Steven A. Nigrelli highlighted the needless tragedies caused by drivers using handheld devices, stating, "When you text and drive, you are putting your life, the lives of your passengers, and the lives of other motorists at risk." He encouraged drivers to wait until they reach a safe place off the road before responding to texts and pledged continued collaboration with the GTSC and law enforcement partners to educate the public on distracted driving dangers.

Throughout April, the GTSC will launch a public service campaign featuring social media, television, radio, and Variable Message Signs on highways to educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. The GTSC recently invited the press to an Emergency Vehicle Operator Course in Colonie, New York, to provide a firsthand look at the risks associated with distracted driving.
