Age 70+ drivers face impending online renewal deadline

It's highly improbable that Governor Gavin Newsom will extend the deadline for senior citizens to renew their noncommercial driver's licenses online.

Newsom declared a state of emergency due to the pandemic, allowing most drivers 70 and up to avoid visiting a DMV office and instead renew their licenses online or by mail.

Since the state of emergency had been lifted, the program was extended by legislative action. While it has the potential to do so again, there is currently no legislation in Sacramento that would do so.

You may be able to renew your driver's license in time if your birthday falls during the first few months of 2023.

Most drivers under 18 can renew their licenses online instead of at a DMV.
