Renew Driver’s License or State ID in Rhode Island
There are a few different ways to renew a Rhode Island driver’s license or non-driver ID. You may renew:
OR
- In person at a Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or AAA office (members only).
Renew RI License Online
To renew an Rhode Island driver’s license or state ID online:
- Visit the DMV online portal.
- Choose the type of license or ID you must renew and enter:
- The identification or license number.
- Your zip code.
- Verify your address. If it must be changed, you can do so online before continuing.
- Provide your credit card information for payment.
It will take up to 60 days to receive your new license.
Renew Rhode Island License in Person
Rhode Island residents can renew their licenses or IDs in person at a:
- DMV office. Commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) must be renewed at the Cranston location.
OR
- AAA office (for AAA members only).
To renew at either, you must provide:
- Your current license or ID.
- A completed Application for License, Identification Card and Permit (LI-1).
- Payment for the applicable renewal fee.
You may be required to pass a vision test and take a photograph for your new ID.
NOTE: CDL driver’s must complete HAZMAT requirements 60 days before renewal (if applicable). Bring your renewal form if you received one in the mail.
RI License Renewal Fees
- State ID renewal: $27.50.
- License renewal for driver’s under 71 years old (valid for 5 years): $62.50.
- License renewal for 71 year-olds (valid for 4 years): $50.50.
- License renewal for 72 year-olds (valid for 3 years): $38.50.
- License renewal for 73 and 74 year-olds (valid for 2 years): $26.50.
- License renewal for 75 year-olds and older (valid for 3 years): $22.50.
- CDL renewal for driver’s up to 70 years old (valid for 5 years): $82.50.
- CDL renewal for 70 year-olds and older (valid for 2 years): $34.50.
