Title and Register a Vehicle in North Dakota
If you own a vehicle in North Dakota, you must title and register the vehicle through the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), whether you just moved to the Peace Garden State or recently purchased a vehicle.
To title and register a vehicle, you’ll need to visit your local NDDOT office and provide your:
- Driver’s license or state ID.
- Vehicle title, if not held by the lienholder (must be signed by both buyer and seller if applicable).
- Completed Application for Certificate of Title & Registration of a Vehicle (SFN 2872).
- Vehicle certificate of origin and odometer statement (if the vehicle is brand new).
- Proof of insurance.
- Payment for the applicable fees and taxes.
Vehicles purchased through a North Dakota dealership will carry a temporary registration valid for 75 days.
New residents or people that purchased vehicles from private sellers may request a temporary registration valid for 30 days online. You will be required to provide your license and print your temporary document.
