Title and Register a Mississippi Vehicle

You’ll need to title and register your vehicle if you recently:

  • Moved to Mississippi.

OR

  • Purchased a vehicle.

Title and Register a Vehicle in Mississippi: New Residents

When you move to Mississippi, you have 30 days after establishing residency to title and register your vehicle to avoid penalty. To complete the process:

  • Visit your local tax collector’s office.
  • Provide your:
    • Current title or registration from the relevant state. If the vehicle is leased or there is a lienholder, you must provide your registration or a duplicate title. If the title is being held out-of-state, you must provide a valid registration receipt.
    • Completed Application for Mississippi Title and License (available at the office).
    • Payment for the applicable fees.

If your vehicle has a lien, the Department of Revenue (DOR) will hold your title application until the title is forwarded. Otherwise, you’ll receive your Mississippi plates immediately.

Registration and Titling for Recently Purchased Vehicles in Mississippi

When you buy a vehicle in Mississippi, you have 7 business days to transfer the title and register the vehicle.

Different counties may have slightly different requirements, generally you’ll need to:

  • Visit your local tax collector’s office.
  • Provide:
    • The current title signed over to you.
    • The odometer disclosure statement (for vehicles under 10 years old).
    • The current registration receipt (from the previous owner if applicable).
    • The window sticker (new cars only).
    • Proof of residency (2 documents may be required).
    • The bill of sale.
    • Payment for the applicable fees.
  • Complete the title application provided at the office (all owners must sign).

Mississippi Title and Registration Fees

  • State sales tax: 5% of the vehicle purchase price.
  • Late penalty for new MS residents: $250 plus a standard late registration fee.
  • Title fee: $9.
  • Expedited title fee: $30 plus the $9 title fee.
  • Registration: $14.
