Renew Louisiana Driver’s License

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) allows customers to renew their IDs or licenses up to 180 days before expiration. Renew your license or ID:

• Online
• By mail.
• In person.

Renewing your license 10 days after expiration will result in a late fee.

Renew LA License Online

The quickest and easiest way to renew your Louisiana is online. However, online renewal is only allowed if you do NOT have to make any changes to your license information.

If eligible, you can renew online by:

1. Visiting the Department of Public Safety (DPS) online portal.
2. Choosing either driver’s license OR Identification card renewal.
3. Certifying you are eligible to renew your license or ID.
4. Entering your driver’s license or ID number and date of birth.
5. Providing any other information requested and your payment information for the renewal fee. The OMV accepts the following credit cards:
   • Mastercard.
   • American Express.
   • Visa.
   • Discover.

After you’ve completed your transaction, you will be sent your new license or ID card in the mail.

Renew Your Louisiana Driver’s License by Mail

Louisiana drivers eligible to renew by mail should receive an invitation before their license expires.

To renew by mail: 

1. Check the renewal notice to make sure you can renew by mail. If you need to change any of your license information, you’ll need to renew in person.
2. Fill out and sign the provided application.
3. Enclose a check made payable to the “Office of Motor Vehicles” for the amount owed.
4. Mail your items to the address provided in your renewal documents.

Renew LA License While Out-of-State

LA residents temporarily out-of-state due to being a full-time student or member of the armed forces may renew by mail, provided you(r): 

• License has NOT expired more than 1 year.
• Renewed in person last time.
• Have a photo in the OMV database.
• Do NOT need to make changes to your license information.

To renew out-of-state, you must:

• Complete a Temporarily Residing Out of State Application for Reconstructed/Duplicate/Renewal/License/ID Card (DPSMV2013).
• Provide proof of Louisiana residency.
• Provide enlistment and deployment papers (for military members).
• Mail your documents with payment to:

Renew LA License in Person

If you are required or prefer to renew your driver’s license or state ID in person, you’ll need to visit your local OMV and provide your:

• Current driver’s license.
• Proof of Louisiana residency. This may include your*:
  • W-2 tax form.
  • Utility bill statement.
  • Paycheck or pay stub.
  • Voter registration card.
• Payment for the license renewal fee.

Louisiana License and ID Renewal Fees

Renewal fees are as follows:

• Standard license: $32.25.
• Non-driver ID: $18.
• Class D license: $54.75 - $66.00.
• Motorcycle endorsement: $12.
• Late fee (more than 10 days after expiration): $15.
• Credit card fee: $1.25 + 1% of the transaction total.

Office locations may charge up to $6 as a late fee.
