Renew Louisiana Vehicle Registration
The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) requires drivers to renew their passenger vehicles every 2 years*.
Registration expires on the last day of the month printed on your registration certificate.
Residents can renew their vehicle registrations:
- Online
- In person.
- By mail.

Renew Louisiana Registration Online
The quickest way to renew an LA vehicle registration is online. To renew online, simply visit the online portal and:
- Select whether you will use your renewal identification number found on your renewal notice OR the information on your current registration to renew (renewal notice is easier).
- Enter the requested information. This may include:
- The vehicle make and model year.
- License plate number.
- Vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Date purchased.
- Your insurance policy number.
- Provide payment for the renewal fee and service charge. The OMV accepts:
- Mastercard.
- American Express.
- Visa.
- Discover.
- Print your registration receipt.
You’ll be mailed your new registration document and plate stickers. Keep your receipt until you receive these items.
Renew LA Car Registration by Mail
To renew your vehicle registration by mail, simply:
- Complete the form provided with your renewal notice.
- Provide a check for the amount owed made payable to the “Department of Public Safety.”
- Mail your items to the address provided on the renewal notice.
Once your items are received, you will be mailed your registration document and plate decal.
Renew Louisiana Registration in Person
Louisiana drivers can renew their vehicle registrations in person at their local OMV any day during the month their registration expires. When you renew in person, you may be asked to provide your:
- Identification
- Current registration or renewal notice.
- Proof of insurance.
- Payment for the applicable registration fees and taxes.
Louisiana Vehicle Registration Renewal Fees
The registration renewal fee for passenger vehicles is .1% of the selling price of the vehicle per year with a minimum base of $10,000. This fee is due every 2 years, making the minimum registration renewal payment $20.
Registration renewal fees for other vehicles are as follows:
- Motorcycles: $12 every 4 years.
- Commercial vehicles: $10 each year.
- Trucks (up to 6,000 pounds): $40 every 4 years.
