Louisiana REAL ID Requirements
REAL ID in Louisiana
Beginning in October 2021, you’ll have to show a passport or federally accepted REAL ID to:
- Board a plane (even domestic flights).
- Enter nuclear power plants.
- Enter select federal facilities.
A REAL ID is NOT needed to complete any of the other tasks you normally use an ID for.
REAL IDs are sometimes called “star IDs” because they have a star in the upper right corner.
If you wish to get a REAL ID, you’ll need to visit your local OMV to present paperwork.

To request a REAL ID, visit your local OMV and provide your proof of:
- This may include your:
- S. birth certificate.
- S. passport.

- Voter registration card.
- This may include a U.S. passport or birth certificate or:

Certain documents may satisfy multiple requirements on this list. For example, a U.S. birth certificate proves identity, birthdate, and legal presence.
If your name on any document does not match your identity document, you will have to provide proof of legal name change. This might include a court-issued:
- Marriage or divorce certificate.
- Document stating you have successfully changed your name.
The OMV provides a helpful intuitive checklist containing all accepted items for gathering the necessary documents.
