Title and Register a Vehicle in Louisiana
Louisiana drivers are required to title and register their vehicles with the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). The process is slightly different based on whether you:
- Just moved to Louisiana.
OR
- Just purchased a vehicle.
You can apply for a title or registration:
- In person at the OMV.
OR
- By mail.
Title and Register a Vehicle Purchased in Louisiana
To title and register a new or used vehicle bought in Louisiana, you must provide:
- A completed Vehicle Application (DPSMV 1799)
- The signed and notarized*:
- Manufacturer’s certificate of origin (if the vehicle was previously untitled).
OR
- Current vehicle title. If a used vehicle is less than 10 years old, you must also provide an odometer reading (if there is not a section for this on the title).
- An itemized bill of sale or invoice from seller to purchaser, which must include:
- The year, make, model and vehicle identification number of the vehicle sold AND the vehicle traded in (if applicable). It must also contain the dealer’s permit number (if applicable).
- Notarization if a tax credit is being applied.
- A completed Uniform Commercial Code - Financing Statement (UCC-1) form if a lien is being recorded.
- Proof of liability insurance if the vehicle was purchased from a private seller.
- A copy of each owner’s valid state photo identification or military ID.
- Payment for the title, registration fees, and taxes.

*A financial institution may take the place of a notary if a lien is being recorded and both buyer and seller are present. A document from the designated authorizing agent on official letterhead must be provided in this instance.
Transfer Title and Register an Out-of-State Vehicle in LA
To transfer your out-of-state title and register your vehicle in Louisiana, you must provide:
- A completed Vehicle Application (DPSMV 1799)
- Proof of liability insurance.
- Original out-of-state certificate of title. If the vehicle title belongs to a lienholder, you may provide a copy of the title or registration that states the lienholder’s information.
- Payment for the applicable fees and taxes.

Louisiana Title and Registration Fees
- Title fee: $68.50.
- Lien recording fee with UCC-1 form: $15.
- Lien recording fee without UCC-1 form (out-of-state lienholder): $10.
- Handling fee: $8.
- Registration fee for passenger vehicles: .02% of vehicle value (minimum $20).
- Road tax fee: Varies by parish of residence.
