In Indiana your renewal date remains the same every year. Your expiration date is printed on your registration card, or you can look the date up based on the first and last letter of your last name.
It’s quick and simple to renew your vehicle registration in Indiana with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. In fact, in most cases you don’t even need to visit your local office.
Renew your Indiana registration:
- Online.
- At a BMV Connect kiosk.
- By Mail.
- In person at a BMV office.
Renew Indiana Registration Online
The easiest way to renew your Indiana vehicle registration is online. To renew your IN registration online:
- Visit the MyBMV online portal.
- Login or create an account.
OR
- Select renew license plates without a MyBMV account.
- Confirm your mailing address.
- Navigate to the home screen and click “renew license plates.”
- Provide the requested information. This may include your:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Driver’s license number.
- Date of Birth.
- Street address and Zip Code.
- Social security number (SSN).
- Provide credit card information to pay the registration renewal fee.
You will receive your registration card and plate decals in the mail within 21 days of submitting your renewal request online.
Renew Indiana Registration At an Automated Kiosk
Another quick way to renew your license plate is at a BMV Connect kiosk. These self-service devices are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and allow you to perform a variety of standard BMV tasks.
These kiosks will provide you with your new registration and license plate decal immediately.
To renew your Indiana registration at one of these machines, bring your current registration or registration renewal notice to a BMV Connect kiosk and:
- Select the option for “Vehicle Registrations” and begin the renewal process.
- Provide the requested information. This may include your:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Date of Birth.
- Driver’s license number.
- Street address and Zip Code.
- Social security number (SSN).
- Provide payment for your registration renewal fee. BMV Connect kiosks accept electronic checks and credit/debit cards.
Renew IN Registration In Person or By Mail
There are several instances that will require you to renew your license plates at a BMV office or by mail.
This includes vehicles:
- With low-digit special group license plates.
- Subject to the Department of Revenue Fuel Tax License.
- Considered “Heavy Highway Use” vehicles.
- Print and complete a IRS Tax Return Form 2290.
Renew these vehicles by completing the paper forms and:
- Mailing your renewal request with payment using the pre-addressed envelope included with your renewal notice, or
- Dropping them off at your local BMV office.
If the necessary forms were not included with your renewal notice, contact the BMV to obtain them.
Indiana Registration Renewal Fees
Registration renewal fees vary, and are calculated based on:
- The type of vehicle.
- The county or municipality you live in.
- The vehicle excise tax.
- Hybrid/electric vehicle fees (if applicable).
