REAL ID in Washington DC
In the near future, you’ll need a REAL ID or other form of federally accepted ID (such as a passport) to:
- Board domestic flights.
 - Enter federal facilities.
 - Enter nuclear power plants.
 
A REAL ID-compliant Washington DC license or ID has a black star in the corner.
If you prefer NOT to obtain a REAL ID, you can obtain or renew a Limited Purpose License or ID that is still valid for all other purposes.
Washington DC REAL ID Requirements
Obtaining a REAL ID requires taking a trip to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
There, you must provide:
- Proof of identity. This may include your:
- U.S. birth certificate.
 - U.S. passport.
 - Unexpired Employment Authorization Card.
 
 - Proof of social security. This may include your:
- Social security card.
 - W-2 or 1099 tax form.
 - Paystub containing your full name and social security number (SSN).
 
 - 2 documents to prove DC residency. These may include your:
- Utility bill from within the past 60 days.
 - Phone bill from within the past 60 days.
 - Medical bill issued from within the past 60 days.
 - Student loan statement from within the past 60 days.
 
 - Payment for the applicable fee.

DC REAL ID Fees
A REAL ID is NOT more expensive than a Limited Purpose License or ID.
- REAL ID-compliant license renewal: $47.00
 - REAL ID-compliant non-driver ID renewal: $20.00
 - REAL ID-compliant renewal non-driver ID for residents 65 years old and older: Free.
 - REAL ID-compliant commercial driver’s license (CDL) renewal: $117.00
 - Duplicate REAL ID-compliant license or ID: $20.00
