I thought everything went pretty smoothly all things considered. I showed up 10 minutes before my appointment and I was in and out very quickly. Make sure you bring everything you need because they will not have sympathy for you. If you are missing something, you will need to leave and make a new appointment.

I visited the DMV Headquarters in Cranston, RI to complete an application for a Real ID. I brought all required documentation and had my paperwork in order, but the wait was borderline unacceptable. Even with an appointment I had to wait outside due to the pandemic procedures at the time. When I was finally let in, the staff member who helped me was struggling to fill out my details. She must have been new, which I can't fault her for, and it may have been the ancient computers they were using that also contributed to the problems. All in all the visit took about 90 minutes when it could have taken 30 if everything had worked correctly. I am disappointed with how this visit went.

The wait time during a pandemic was so much better than non pandemic wait. It was much more structured and a better overall experience. They should keep appointments for this from now on.

COVID procedures slowed things down, but I appreciated the staff's efforts to maintain a safe, organized and pleasant environment. Tips for Others: Be sure to do a lot of research ahead of time to bring all the identification you will need. I was getting a Real ID which was extra intensive, but I brought lots of extra identification just in case (utility bill at my new address, marriage certificate that shows name changes, etc.) It would be awful to be turned away once you finally got there because you were missing paperwork (it happened a few times while I was there. The staff was pleasant but it's still a very frustrating situation!)
