Texas Driver’s License and ID Renewal

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) allows residents to renew their driver’s licenses and state IDs up to 2 years before and after expiration.

Texas licenses are valid for 8 years or 2 years depending on your age. ID cards are valid for 6 years.

You can renew your Texas driver’s license or ID card:

  • Online.
  • By phone.
  • By mail.
  • At a DPS licensing office.

Renew Your Texas License or ID Online or by Telephone

For many Texas driver’s and residents, renewing a license or ID doesn’t require leaving the house.

You can renew online or by phone as long as you(r):

  • Are a U.S. citizen.
  • Renewed your last license or ID in person.
  • Have your social security number (SSN) on file with the DPS.
  • Are younger than 79 years old (rule applies to drivers only).
  • Do NOT possess a commercial, Class A, or Class B license.
  • Are 18 years old or older.
  • Do NOT possess a provisional or learner license.
  • Current license is NOT suspended or revoked.
  • Health has NOT significantly changed since in a way that would impair your ability to drive since you were last issued a license (rule applies to drivers only).

Call 1-(866) 357-363 or visit the DPS online portal and provide your:

  • License, ID or audit number on the card.*
  • Date of birth.
  • Last 4 digits of your SSN.
  • Credit card information for the applicable fee. The DPS accepts:
  • Visa.
  • Mastercard.
  • American Express.
  • Discover.

If you renew online, print your temporary license or ID when you complete your transaction. This document is good for 60 days.

*If this is unavailable you must answer security questions to prove your identity and pay an additional fee to renew your license.

Renew Your Texas License or ID by Mail

If you prefer, you can renew your TX license or ID by mail as long as a renewal notice was delivered to your address.

NOTE: If you received a renewal notice in the mail you are also eligible to renew online or by phone.

To renew by mail, simply follow the instructions written on the renewal notice. You may be asked to provide your:

  • License or ID number.
  • SSN.
  • Check or money order for the applicable renewal fee.

After your transaction is processed by the Texas DPS, your new ID will be sent to your residence.

Renew Your Texas License or ID in Person

Renewal at a Texas driver licensing office is required for people ineligible to renew by mail or online. To renew in person, first make an appointment. Then, visit your local licensing office and provide your*:

  • Completed Driver License or Identification Card Application (DL-14A).
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. This may include your:
    • U.S. birth certificate.
    • U.S. passport.
    • U.S. Certificate of Naturalization.
    • Permanent resident card.
  • Identity. This may include your:
    • Texas driver’s license or ID.
    • U.S. passport or certificate of citizenship.
    • Permanent resident card.
  • Proof of social security number (SSN). This includes your:
    • Social security card.
    • W-2 or 1099 tax forms.
    • Paystub that includes your name and full SSN.
  • Payment for the applicable renewal fee.

You will have your picture and thumbprint taken.

Texas License and ID Renewal Fees

  • Texas license 8-year renewal (18-84 years old): $33.
  • Texas license 2-year renewal (85 years old and older): $9.
  • Disabled veterans: Free.
  • Motorcycle license (Class M) renewal: $44.
  • ID card renewal (59 years old and younger): $16.
  • ID card renewal (60 years old and older): $6.
